Swedish Massages

What is a Swedish Massage?

The Swedish massage is the most common Western massage and forms the foundation for the sports massage, deep tissue massage, and aromatherapy massage, amongst others.

It is based on the concepts of anatomy and physiology and can be either gentle or firm, depending on what your massage therapist is trying to achieve. All Swedish massages use massage oil to lubricate the skin.

Specific, traditional massage strokes are then performed; these movements warm up your muscle tissue and stimulate circulation. The Swedish massage is particularly effective in releasing muscle tension, breaking up muscle 'knots', and relieving pain.

What is the Difference Between a Swedish
and Deep Tissue Massage?

The Deep Tissue massage is a type of Swedish massage but has a more specific purpose.

While traditional Swedish massages
are most commonly requested and are generally more comprehensive and relaxing, a Deep Tissue massage is more effective
for chronic muscle problems and specific small muscle injuries.

As the name suggests, Deep Tissue massages focus is on the deeper tissue of the muscle. Firm, constant pressure is
applied on a specific muscle area until the muscle pushes back and relaxes.

Traditional Swedish massages, on the other hand,
uses a variety of strokes to improve blood circulation, relieve overall muscle tension, and increase flexibility.
It is very effective in relieving emotional and physical stress.

So, unless you need specific work on a specific injury or have chronic muscle problems, it would probably be more
beneficial for you to opt for the traditional Swedish massage.

What are the Benefits of Getting a Swedish Massage?

The Swedish massage is a great massage to choose if you haven't had a massage before. If you are unsure whether it would be beneficial for you to get a Swedish massage, below is a list of the benefits associated with this massage.

Reduces Stress: The atmosphere, down time, and hands-on attention you receive in this massage is sure to relax you, lowering your cortisol (stress hormone) levels. This in turn has its own set of benefits; reduced tension headaches, more energy, and better sleep. By reducing the tension and anxiety in your body, the Swedish massage can help to relieve depression.

Manages Pain:
Swedish massage is effective in the management of pain in conditions such as osteoarthritis and sciatic. Also, if you are suffering with cramps and muscle spasms, this massage therapy can focus on these areas to relieve the pain.

Increases Blood Flow:
Your massage therapist massages in a way that opens up your blood vessels and increases your blood flow. This means your blood circulation is improved which means your muscles are receiving more nutrient-rich oxygen. Increased blood flow also means your lymphatic system is being stimulated, which means waste passes through your body quicker.

Rehabilitates Muscle Injuries:
When blood flow is increased, more oxygen and nutrients are pumped into your tissues and vital organs. This causes injured areas to become more flexible and heal at an accelerated rate.

Increases Flexibility:
If your muscles are relaxed they have a much wider range of motion. A Swedish massage and regular stretching will help you avoid injuries and get more out of your periods of exercise.

Improves Immune System:
Along with reduced stress, lower cortisol levels also allow for your immune system to strengthen. This means you will be less likely to get sick and have to take off work or cancel your weekend plans.
