The Benefits of

Modern Spa Treatments

The Origins of Traditional Spa Treatments

Spa treatments, in the traditional sense, were believed to have the healing powers of mineral waters. One of the earliest accounts of bathing as a curative process was recorded by the Greek philosopher Hippocrates between 460 and 370 B.C. He is even believed to have said, "The way to health is to have an aromatic bath and scented massage every day."

Water as a healing agent was the founding principle for spa treatments with everything from mineral-infused treatments and thalassotheraphy, to bathing in seawater to heal the skin.

It is not clear where the term "spa" actually originated from, but there are two main theories regarding it's origin. The first suggestion is that "spa" is an acronym for the Latin phrase "salus per aquae", meaning "health from water".

The second suggestion is that it comes from the small Belgian town called Spa. This was a place where Roman soldiers would bath in hot mineral springs to ease the aches and wounds from a battle.

Natural springs began to take on the name "spa" in the 1300s. In 1326, the term referred to a health resort in the vicinity of natural springs. Individual springs were thought to be able to treat different diseases, depending on the minerals they contained.

These natural spas were not native to Greece and Rome alone. The spa-going tradition was developing all over the world, in places like Japan, Turkey, and Finland. Many of the treatments developed in these countries have become the staples of any modern spa today.

The Contemporary Spa Movement

Spas today have come a long way from the mineral baths of the ancient Greeks and Romans. The first ever day spa was opened by Elizabeth Arden in 1910, it was known as "Manhattan's Red Door Salon" and it offered many of today's contemporary treatments like manicures and facials.

By the 1980s the modern concept of a spa seemed to have really taken off. Over the next 20 years, spas would be frequented primarily by wealthy women, looking for a way to treat themselves, and their friends, to pampering and relaxation.

Recently, there has been a shift in focus from beauty and pampering to health and wellness in the spa industry. This has been aided by the introduction of technology to the spa world.

The Introduction of Technology

With the introduction of technologically advanced treatments to the offering of most spas today, it's important to stay informed about what exciting new developments are on offer.

The impact of technology on the modern day spa means that the possibilities for beauty and wellness are constantly broadening. For example, today's latest technology allows one to have lash lifts, plant stem cell facials, and fat freezing treatments.

The Lash Lift treatment uses updated perming techniques to lift and lengthen the lashes, giving them the appearance of being curled. Curled lashes is one of the quickest and simplest ways of lifting your face. Once excess oil is removed, silicone shields are placed on the eyelids and your lashes are brushed back onto the shield.

A perming lotion is then applied to the roots and left for ten minutes. After this, a neutraliser is applied, and then an eyelash tint. Finally, a moisturising serum is applied which lifts the lashes from the shields.

The Elemis treatment is a facial treatment that uses natural plant stem cells to promote cellular activity, reduce puffiness, and refine your facial contours. Elemis is one of the first skincare brands to incorporate plant-based stem cells into their products. These stem cells are rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties.

Extraction of plant stem cells can only be from limited areas of the plant, but fortunately only very small amounts are needed because of the potency of the cells.

Cooltech is a treatment that cools the skin to eliminate fat cells in a non-invasive way. Cold air is used to inflame and rupture fat cells. These cells then die and the body is able to remove them naturally.

It is said that results can be seen within four months. It is important to remember though that nothing can prevent the development of new fat cells. One would need to make changes to their lifestyle and diet to restrict the growth of new fat cells.
